Hands down, this was the best cop film I've seen in years. Although there is a great deal of craziness, going on in this film. The actors in this film seem to be sincere in playing their roles as written and are right on target with the script. This film tries to create a nuance of something, but it's really hard to nail down. I think the film was supposed to cause you to really think how important honesty and integrity are in life as seen through the eyes of Ed Norton's character.
Colin Farrell, Edward Norton, Noah Emmerich, and Jon Voight all deliver great performances. There are many intense scenes throughout the movie, and Norton and Farrell match them with their own intensity. Voight is believable and realistic as the patriarch of the family of cops and the chief, trying to keep his family in order as he thinks it should be.
There are many inconsistencies in this film which cause me to laugh, but, I have to remember that this is Hollywood and it becomes much less important to tell a story the way you would tell it. Everyone will see this film in a different light, but the irony of the film makes it more interesting since the characterizations are less predictable. Maybe that's why the director intentionally created the film this way; to show how chaotic and unpredictable a single second in a NYPD cop's life really is.
4/5 for action, suspense, mystery, intrigue, and story-line.
