Resident Evil Outbreak **Fun, but Horrible Load Times**

I was very excited when I heard this game was comming out so I went out and pre ordered my copy. Should have rented if first to save myself the 50 bucks. The game itself is a really good idea and I had high hopes for it, just like I did for Chaos Legion. After about a week I figured I learned enough to give a fair review of the game. So here is my take on the game:

Gameplay: Typical RE fare. For those who have played any other RE game it goes about the same with less story. The nice thing about it is that they did actually add some DMC-ish controls to it. The one thing they still have not done, is make your character able to walk while having their gun drawn. The old RE control scheme is there as well for those who want it. This is also where my biggest beef with the game comes in. The fact that there are no saves at all in any of the levels makes them quite hard. The other problem too is that when you play this game you need to have a whole lot of time on your hands to play it. Like this isn't a sit down and pick up for a short while game. I'm talking like you need to invest like an hour or more to these scenarios sometimes. This being said, the most annoying part is that when you die you gotta do it all over. Granted that when this happens you now know where things are so you can do it quicker, but after you spend all that time finding something, then croak, well it takes the wind out of the gaming experience.

Story: If your reading this review most of you probably know the story of Racoon City. But if you don't the brief story for this game is that you are an everyday average Joe trying to escape from a zombie infested city alive. When you actually start playing the scenarios there is not much story to them except at the beginning and then end of each one. This makes sometimes finding items sometimes a little annoying, as you have to explore EVERYTHING.

Sound: Over all really really good sound. Pretty typical of the RE series.

I think that covers the basics. So as I see it, this is a good RE game, but I would not recommend it unless you have a network adapter. Because without it its not too spectacular. People usually shoot me for saying this, but I have a lot more fun playing RE dead aim, just because the old RE scheme is getting a bit drawn out. So thats about my take on the game. Rent it first, then see what you think. The only really fun scenarios are the 1st and 3rd. So like I said before you go out and spend your 50 bucks, make sure you really have to have this game. This one is not for all RE fans, despite what all the gamming mags say.

''Don't believe the hype''

  A good thought, bad execution...

I have played every game in the Resident Evil series and I was really excited for this game to be released. I was very disappointed upon first playing it. The thought of a Resident Evil game with eight different playable characters and a few who play along side you was a god send...until I put the disc into my playstation 2.

The Ugly: One of the truly awful things about this game, are the incredibly long load times. Everytime you go through a door you have to wait 30 seconds until you go into said room...by the time you enter, you forget why you went there. The controls are absolutly terrible...It takes a long time before you get used to them, even after you get used to them, they are STILL awkward! The inventory screen interface is terrible, the game still keeps moving while you are trying to do things in your inventory, which makes it hard to equip an item. You have Extremely limited inventory space, you can hold 4 items with most of the characters.

The Bad: The graphics could be better, especially the zombie renderings. The voice acting is the worst I have ever heard and your allies A.I. are just about at the retarded level. You can ask your partners to do things, but they rarely follow thru. Your allies run around like total idiots and rarely help you. The zombies are pretty weak and easy to get away from. What story there is (and there isn't much) is total crap. It's hard to figure out what to do or where you are supposed to go amidst all the confusion. Weak unlockables...low replay value. Not one continuous game, utilizes scenarios instead...which is done horribly. There is almost no transition from one to the next.

The Good: Eight playable characters all with different special abilities. Online mode, which (hopefully) makes your allies less retarded. Can be fun if you figure out what you are supposed to be doing before you either give up, or are killed. The music is as great as any other RE game. You get bit by a zombie? Well you'll have to hurry up and finish the board before you turn into one. Cutscenes look great as always.

Capcom could have done so much with this game, but instead they made a great idea, a horrible mistake. I have beaten this game and when I was done I just felt empty, like I had wasted my time. I haven't played Outbreak File #2, but I am guessing it is better than this installment...get that instead. Outbreak is maybe worth a rent or borrow, but don't pay over $10.00 for this one.

This game is unlike all the other Resident Evil Game were you play level to level. The graphics are Great and Good story line but it is a little tough to get all of the earned Items. If you like adventure and action this is a game for you.

  An Aweome ever-changing Zombie Game!!

I am an absolute Zombie fan and has loved almost every Resident Evil game produced. That aside this online game hit the spot with the ability of playing with others making it a truly unique game with every play. Interactive online games such as this will certainly make non-online games a thing of the past. The problem with this particular game with it being out awhile now is the fact that going online now to play you will find yourself playing with people that have become masters and perhaps bored with the normal play and are finding ways to excite themselves at the expense of those trying to survive within the team. Another concern is Capcom with rumors of them possibly shutting down the server and ending the online experience File 2. If you are thinking of getting it get it quick and look me up. My name on their is survivordave, I would be happy to help you learn the modules and get us to safety.

  Lots of fun!

Resident Evil Outbreak involves several charecters trying to flee the Racoon City Viral outbreak. You can choose one of several charecters to play, each with there own strengths and weaknesses. Gameplay is very easy to pick up on and charecter co-op is pretty cool as well. Loading times and going thru different doors can be a bit of pain since you have to wait for the system to load. The game has several old enemies as well as some tougher ones. The game involves several scenarios and can be beat with each different charecter, unlocking new items and scenes each time. All in all its a fun game for 20 dollars to kill zombies and other enemies when your frustrated from work. Storylines run from resident evil 0 to the third installment. Not the best Resident EVil game, but fun regardless if your a fan. Be warned that there is cursing in the game and some nice bloody scenes, so this is not meant for a child. I would rate it PG-13 if anything.

Ugh...Same Resident Evil backstory but with a whole new cast of characters that are just simply annoying. You're once again wandering the streets of Raccoon City killing Zombies and trying to escape. This time though you have four people you have to babysit as well. If one person dies they come back as a Zombie but at least you have the pleasure of killing them. You can trade items with other people but it rarely works out. You need ammo and George needs ammo. You offter to trade a Herb for the ammo but George refused and you die due to lack of weaponry. Another common scenario: You make it to the end of the Hospital. You're in Cautian and bleeding. Theres the exit! But wait! Two people are not with you so you can't complete the level. Meaning you have to wander around looking for them and usually have to put up with a Leech Man! After wasting all your ammo and recovery weapons LOOKING for your teammates you must go back to the basement and kill the Queen Leech. Usually resulting in death or severe viral infection. Want a good horror game on PS2? Pick up Silent Hill 4.

Well Resident evil Outbreak is some what different from the other Resident evils. For a start there a 8 charecters and over 20 unlockable charecters. There is also a large variety of monsters which include; Zombies, Lickers,Hunter Gamma's, Dogs and many others. One of the most intresting things is that we get to see Raccoon City is Playstation 2 graphics. The story takes over 5 seperate scenarios the last one "Decisions Decisions" is longer and more complex than the other scenarios in the game. The story also changes depending on what charecter you play each scenario as. For example in the "Below Frezing Point" scenario if you play as "Yoko" you get a magnum where as the rest of the charecters don't. There are also lots of extra features for you to buy each time you complete a scenario you get points to spend in the collection shop. To get more points and unlock new features you have to complete scenarios as different charecters and on harder diffuculty settings. However on the downside in gets diffucult at parts and the puzzles can be very diffucult but to me this makes the game more fun. However it took me a long time to figure the elevator pass code on the "Hive" scenario and in dosn't help with that leech man following you around. However this is a good fun Resident evil that adds new features to the games serise. To me its hard to understand why so many people don't like this game but everybody as a different view on things. I would just like to thank every one who as taken time to read my review thankyou.

  OUTBREAK
Review created: 06/07/07
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am an ultimate Resident Evil fan of the games and both movies (keep making movies!) and I bought Outbreak so I could try a new PS2 game. If you are a big fan of RE, you'll probably like this game. It takes a lot of patience that many people don't have, and hard thinking about how to proceed. You have to notice every detail and put your mind to work, or else you'll get stuck. If you are willing to be patient and think, this game is quite suspenseful. The variety of characters is great, but the lack of item slots is extremely annoying (only four slots with the exception of a couple characters). It's defenitely no match for Resident Evil 4, but combines the thrill and challenge of the old PS1 games into an epic horrific ride.

RE goes online......does it work though?
Review created: 27/06/07(updated 28/06/07)

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Resident Evil Outbreak series was highly anticipated, as is was bringing the RE universe to the online world. However, the intial game plan was scrapped and Capcom instead planned on three releases beginning with Outbreak aka File 1. This was obviously an attempt to milk as much money out of the game as possible. Initially RE: Online (original title) was going to have 20+ scenarios to play through in one release, instead the games only have 5 each. Thus a very repetitive offline experience.

Highs:
8 different characters to choose from with their own abilities and weaknesses/strengths.

5 different levels of play (2 coming from RE2/3 respectively), length depends on what you choose to do.

Familiar controls - for the most part, plus some ad-libs/commands to give your teammates. For the first time you can use ordinary weapons or even no weapons to fight off the virus ridden monsters.

Online with up to 3 others - This is the highlight of the game and where the majority of the replay value stems from. And online is free and still active to this day (File 2 has closed though as of April 07)

No voice chat: Some want it, but let's just say you're better off without it in this game. Plus it kinda ruins the limited communication (in-game) that makes you have to think smart or DIE.

Lows:
Horrible A.I - they do not use their special abilites, waste too much ammo, and get hit quite often, sometimes they'll appear in a room with you and just magically have missing health/or are floored without there even being enemies to have attacked them. A real pain in the (insert word) if you will.

Slight Repetitiveness - Being that there is only 5 levels to play, once you've mastered them it can become quite repetitive (even online). If you're looking for offline experience it can become quite dull compared to online, where your online teammates could make things more interesting.

Bosses - compared to file 2, are relatively easy....depending on your skills and equipment you have.

Alyssa ad-lib freeze in 1st lvl - This only occurs in the "Outbreak" level in the first release version of the game. It doesn't occur online.

Long load times w/o hdd: 10 or more secs on Ps2, only 8 on ps3 ( a small 3-4 secs on hdd).

Overall:
I've spent 3 years playing this and it's only sequel (thanks alot Capcom for ruining chances of File 3 >.<), and they have been simply the most fun I've had online, and sometimes offline as well. Some people don't spend enough time to really enjoy what it offers (that or they just plain suck), and keep in mind this game was planned for online gameplay. It offers amazing Ps2 graphics, HIGH replayability, and classic yet improved RE gameplay (pre-RE4). So for what it's worth, I say give it a try. You just might like it. I can't express enough how fun online is versus offline. TRY IT OUT!!

My personal review of Resident Evil Outbreak
Review created: 30/05/07
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Well, first off, I bought this game for one reason, it was Resident Evil. For those of you who've played Resident Evil 4 and claim to be a big fan of the series, avoid this game. There's nothing similer about these two games. Those who have played the original Resident Evil titles, you'll enjoy this more than the RE4 fans. Those of you who are new to the series and want to try out a Resident Evil game, check this one out before RE4. A main thing on this is the Online play, which, is fun, can also lag a bit if you don't have a HDD

Resident Evil 4 is a good game, don't get me wrong, but it's nothing like the other RE titles. If you just want to check out a fun and simple Action Adventure video game that's completely linear, try out RE4. If you want try out an origianl Resident Evil, try out Outbreak. It has the original controls (Can be a pro or a con, depending on whether or not you've played an RE game before) and the newer 'Onimusha controls'. Basically, the difference between the two is that on the Directional Pad, you change the side you're looking at with the sides, and you press the Up or Down butten to move even when facing a certain direction (It can become confusing to new players) and with the 'Onimusha controls' it's purley based on whichever direction you want to go, you just press in the direction you want to move.

The game, unlike other Resident Evil titles, is level based. You choose a scenario and one of eight characters;

Kevin- The Playful Police Officer
Mark- The Vietnam Vet Security Guard
David- The Mysterious Plumber
George- The Follwer Doctor
Jim- The Cowerdice Subway Station Staff
Alyssa- The Nosey Journalist
Cindy- The Kind Hearted Waitress
Yoko- The Quiet College Student

Each with their own Special Ability and Personal Item. You can unlock different costumes for each character by completing certain tasks. (beat a certain level, find this object etc. etc.) If you have a Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2 save on your memory card, you can transfer data between the two. Mainly costumes and the such (You can unlock File #3 costumes using a GameShark and transfer them)

My overall review is this;

Get the game if you like other Resident Evil games or if you want to try out the original stuff. The game is better if you can play Online but is still as good when playing offline.

4/5 I suggest that you buy it, but if you are a bit hesitant, rent it and see if you'd want to buy it.

this game so as file are the best games i played since a really really long time, the game it self is good but when you play this game online w/friends this game is great ofline it takes 90% of the fun away, what game have you played for over 300 hours and still not bored of, i beat you not many. the dissoppoinment is that outbreak file 2 is closing the servers in march 31/07 that means i wont be playing that game alot more but file 1 is still up :) at least something but if you looking for a online game and teamwork play. i highly recomend this game as its one of my favorites, but like i said if you play it offline you wont enjoy the full game.

I wanted to buy the game due to the fact that I heard there is a great two player coop. There very well may be, but it is online only and guess what, no server to connect to. My own fault I know, but still why can't there be a great two player zombie coop game. Other than that, game is great and looks amazing.
