Easily one of the best games for Gamecube. The atmosphere of this game is incredible, I really thought I was insane after playing it. It really knows how to mess with your head. Not a game to play in the dark by yourself. The storyline is clever and interesting. The puzzles aren't overly difficult but they'll get you thinking for sure. The variety of characters, weapons, and locales are impressive. It's also interesting to see how they all come together the further in you get. The enemies aren't horribly difficult, not like in Resident Evil when your best bet is just to run away and try to save bullets. It's pretty linear, I'd say that's really it's only fault, which lessens the replay value a bit, but it's such a great game that I found myself playing it over and over anyway.

This game knows how to lead you along, then totally throw you a curve ball when you least excpect it. You will be addicted to this game just from watching the opening cut scene and playing about 5 min. Not something to play by yourself if you get jumpy, cause it WILL scare you half to death especially at first a few times, until you get somewhat use to it. The really cool thing is this game will mess with your head, and thats all ill say because you have to play it and experience it for yourself, and soon youll know exactly what I mean. The fighting in this game isnt terribly difficult, until you get to the big guys, but its still a lot of fun. Very puzzling and head scratching at times, Id advise saving often on a couple different games to have different points to go back to, as it is possible to get yourself into a very sticky spot if you run into a load of bad guys without much in the way of magic or supplies. LOOK AROUND, this is a game that will let you miss a few things if your not careful, and then you REALLY need them later, and a few its impossible to go back to get. The wide range of characters and weapons makes for a very diverse game play as you progress through the story, which is also excellent and addictive. You will honestly want to play this game until you finish it, just to find out how the story ends. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who loves 1st person action/horror/puzzle games. I give it 5 of 5 any day, great game that had me hooked through more than one play through. Go find it, and buy it, NOW! Trust me, you will not regret it (unless it really does drive you crazy lol)

By far one of the best games for the GameCube.

Eternal Darkness offers an amazing story about a girl trying to solve the mystery behind her grandfathers murder. What truely makes this game unique and ahead of its time is that you don't just play as one character the entire time. You play from a range of characters from 400 A.D. till the present. Each character has their own weapons from their own time period. Also your sanity meter can really mess with your head. This is one of the few games that actually had made me jump like a really good horror movie. If you loved the Resident Evil series, this game is a must for you.

  Face the Darkness!!!

What's not great about this amazing game? This is survival horror at it's best, so innovative and atmospheric that even surpasses Resident Evil, being even more creepy and atmospheric!

The great thing about this game is how it looks different from everything you ever played, this is so plot-driven that many will feel bored right away, so do fear, this game is not for everybody, it's an epic, mysterious and intriguing journey through various present and past events, all culminating into a fantastically, creative and labyrinthic piece of art! So if you seek action filled game at first instance, you might consider pass it.

In this game you shall --- the occult, all kinds of dark themes are dealt, you play as a dozen of different characters during the whole game, each on in a different time of history, so sometimes you play in the same place, with some different character, in some different time, meaning that the stuff made in the past, affected the future, and reminisces of what had been done, being visible in the future; and it is done so perfectly that gets you even more involved with the plot. Another important thing is how it's historically coherent, like the weaponry that keeps evolving, in the past only swords are used, whereas the time passes others kinds are used, reaching revolvers and automatic fire weapons!

You will play during war time (both world wars), ruins, inquisition, and many other historic moments, but it's at the present days (2000 A.D), at a mansion, that the main character lies, Alex Roivas, trying to uncover the truth about the murder of her grandfather, Edward Roivas, in his own mansion; after two weeks of the gruesome murder, the police fails in finding any proof or clue, so Alex decides to search herself for clues, adn that's when she finds the Tome of Eternal Darkness, an ancient book made by human flesh and bone, and by that and its pages hidden all over the old mansion, that is her connection to the past events and characters.

The game has a lot of classic fantasy inspired stuff too, noticeable in bosses for example. Runes and magic are very important, with them you'll make enchantments and will be able to cat the magic that does several different things, pretty crucial to the game.

And maybe one of the best things about this game is the Sanity, yes, your character looses sanity every time he finds himself in a dangerous situation, menaced by zombies and some others creatures for example, each character has different amounts of sanity, health and magic, and the become more vulnerable to his weakest point, if your character has low sanity, he will start hallucinating really soon and a lot of strange things will happen, believe me, some of them are quite annoying and for the first time viewers maybe a little disturbing, but all adds the atmosphere, and it's a really gloomy atmosphere, be aware!

So if you like extremely executed plot-driven games, with many historical and fantasy terms and connections, some violence and perfectly crafted dark atmosphere, you'll surely love this game!

  It'll give you the chills!

As perhaps the most legitimately mature M-rated console game to ever be released, Eternal Darkness sets a new standard for the action adventure genre. It'll literally make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

Featuring a gripping story that never lets up, inventive gameplay, sky-high production values, and an attention to detail that is seldom matched, it's an experience like no other.

It's a must-buy for anyone who appreciates an amazing story coupled with equally amazing gameplay, and since it offers almost 30 hours of gameplay each time through (and incentive to play through more than once), it's well worth the money spent.

  Old-style play-engine. Scary at times.

This is a relatively old-style play-engine game for the Gamecube (it's not Pikmin!) but very enjoyable.
The game synthesizes many mystic themes all-in-one with a many character storyline. The
sanity meter is a funny addition and scary cinematics at times. For having seen my son play it quite often, it's a success.

Mindbending, Action Packed, Story Driven Thriller!

Eternal Darkness was easily one of the greatest games EVER. Even the next gen of console gaming will struggle to surpass this sort of quality that is present in Eternal Darkness. The story is so deep, plot driven and dark, that it reels you in. The game play provides players with a variety of characters, weapons and even spells to use. Perhaps the greatest asset of this game is its intense psychological roots. You must maintain your characters sanity (killing or avoiding monsters), but this game also tries to mess with your head. Many times, the game will pull a trick on you - the player - making you think something has gone wrong with your system, tv or that you've just been totally ransacked by a horde of zombies. This game provides puzzles, action, story, fear and it's the total package. I defy anyone to play through this game without either being impressed or finding themselves addicted. It leaves little to work with as far as replay value goes, but put it away for a month and you'll find yourself itching to pop it back in the GC for one more round. Clearly, this game is a template for what all games. Fans of the Resident Evil series and The Suffering titles will adore this game.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is one of the best

As far as scares go, it definitely could've used more; but as far as overall entertainment value, this game delivers like no other. I was skeptical when I heard that the story makes you play as 12 different characters; but I was able to put myself in almost all of their shoes. Great story and the sanity meter is revolutionary. Because it came out on the GameCube, it didn't get enough attention, but this game is definitely one for the collection.

The best thing I can say about Eternal Darkness is that I wanted to play it more. The controls are tight, it isn't terribly hard, and the graphics are good enough. However, the game is more unsettling than actually scary.

I read reviews for this game and it almost always came up as one of the scariest games of all times. Very original game play, interesting plot, and just plain awesome. Besides, its an older game so it is usually pretty cheap.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (Gamecube/ Wii)
Review created: 17/01/10
by:

This RPG is one you'll never forget. It's a psychological thriller that tells the tale of the darkness that has manipulated humanity for centuries. The ancients, who controlled the earth before the human species existed, await until the time is right to take control once more. Secret organizations seeking the ancients' favor try to bring the darkness back into the world through rituals, worship, and sacrifice. Humanity is on the brink of extinction, but all hope is not lost. The fate of humanity rests on a select few individuals. Play these characters throughout human history to save the world from darkness.

If you like RPGs, interesting storylines, and a thrill, you'll love this game! Besides, how can you pass up a game that has a sanity meter? Strange things begin to happen as your character loses sanity. Seriously. Try it, you'll like it.

If H.P Lovecraft made a video game
Review created: 09/01/10

Eternal Darkness is a funny sort of game. Mechanically, its actually rather poor. Combat and exploration feels very familiar of other games and stiff (though the combat does allow for some fun targeting at specific parts of enemies). However this is one of those few glorious games for the experience.

The plot is really nothing more than a "ZOMG MONSTERS ARE PLANNING GLOBAL TAKEOVER!" sort of game, but its such a well told and mysteriously played out story that is sucks you right in like a high powered vacuum cleaner. I was hooked to say the least.

The other, even more unique aspect of ED, is the way it scares you. Other horror games work through monsters jumping at you from the shadows or giving a sense of tension by leaving you always low on health and ammo. It works quite the opposite in ED, you gain a healing spell and melee combat is arguably more effective than ranged/ammo based weapons. This game scares you visually, and that says something considering this was made on the Gamecube (easily the weakest on graphics of the 3 systems of that generation of consoles). The grotesque nature of the game is intense and truly haunting, this isn't something you want to play alone at night, its a kind of fear that sticks with you. It's difficult to explain in any other way than saying that I found myself double taking to make sure I wasn't seeing things after playing the game.

The game also has an incredibly fun system using a "sanity meter", as your character begins seeing things, the game will start messing with you the player. I won't spoil anything but I'll just say that when the game told me it was getting an error, I wasn't sure to believe it or not.

If you consider yourself a fan of horror (wether game, literature, or film) I would highly recommend this, just to bear witness to how a game SHOULD scare you. Its a refined kind of fear, a subtle and fair kind, and it's not one you'd want to miss.

  Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
Review created: 12/12/09

This is a great game and really brings a lot to the survival horror franchise. The way the sanity meter affects your game play really is marvelous. It is however regrettably that this is the only entry on this franchise I really think Eternal Darkness can stand shoulder to shoulder with today’s greatest survival horror franchise like Resident Evil(before RE5), dead space and silent hill.
Keep in mind that this game came in 2002 but probably already knew that anyone who is reading this knows what he/she is buying for a far more detailed info visit IGN at: http://cube.ign.com/articles/363/363071p1.html

This item rocks. I'm so glad that I purchased it. The item came way before I thought it should and so, when it came, I wondered what I'd received! I've played it nearly every day since it came. I'd watched the entire game played, online, but I'm so glad that I can now do it for myself. Thanks so much!

  One of Gamecube's best gems
Review created: 13/09/09

This game will freak you out if you have a good surround sound setup and will quickly immerse you in it's audio creepiness. Visuals are dated at this point in time like any other last gen game but with progressive scan and 16:9 aspect ratio support it fights time much better than most Game Cube games. Without spoiling anything for you except the unexpected with this game, it will surprise you. If you have a Game Cube or a Wii you owe it to yourself to try this amazing classic.
