I have read The Five People you Meet in Heaven and Tuesdays with Morrie; and absolutely Loved them! This book flows with the same excitement and ease as the the other two mentioned also written by Mitch Albom. I have never been a avid reader, and with interruptions of the House and Kids, can hardly find the time to read. These books "Take Me Away" and allow me time for myself and the ability to reflect on what the writer says. I think we can all find a piece of ourselves in his writing. This book is a quick reader with great impact. A definite must in your home library collection.

One more great book for Albom

I have read Mitch Albom's books, Tuesdays With Morrie and The Five People You Meet In Heaven, both of which I liked. I liked this latest book by Albom, too. It is written in his simple, easy style that pulls you into the story despite yourself. I felt I knew where the story was going, and yet, I couldn't put it down. In his other books, Albom hits a personal nerve for most people and this book is no different. For One More Day may not drasticly change your life, but it will probably make you stop for a moment, look around and wonder at the choices you make. Its that kind of book.

Another Tear Jerker: For One More Day (Mitch Albom)

The book's main characterm Charley Benetto, is a self-professed, middle-aged loser. His marriage has failed and his only daughter doesn't even want him at her wedding. Taking his own life seems to be the only way out.

A fairly "oh-hum" theme? Yes. But Mitch Albom brings a whole new level to a common tale and I guarantee you will be hooked from the start...just as you were hooked by Five People You Meet in Heaven and Tuesdays with Morrie.

Fot One More Day is an easy and fast read but you'll want to absorb it without distraction or noise. Have the kleenex handy. You'll be thinking about this book long after it's finished. It's too good a book to wait for the paperback version. Get it now.

Mitch Albom's words flow in such a way that you can read this book in one day. My brother died when we were kids and I would love to have one more day or even an hour to tell him how much I love him. This book will make you appreciate those that are still alive.

I have read and love the previous Mitch Albom books. In my opinion this book is the best yet. The words are powerful and evoke so much emotion. Every once in awhile someone comes along that leaves their handprint on your life. I think you can change the world with this book. This book makes you really think about the people you take for granted. We all take our friends and family for granted, but we never stop to think about how our actions can affect those we love. For the better, but also for worse, when we are careless with our words and our deeds. A heartfelt book that has the ability to change how we think about life and death. I savored it, trying to make it last longer than the day it took me to read it. It is a tribute to the force and timelessness of family and true friends. About reaching beyond one's limitations. I think we all have that small voice inside that says: "It's never too late".

Another Mitch Albom book worth reading

The book starts out in typical Albom fashion, quickly setting "the hook" and from then on, you're finding it hard to put down. I re-read it and may read it again. Symbolism abounds and it has a finish that will make you wonder even more than you might have.
The consistency of this authors' works had me thinking: "How many other books has he written other than "Tuesdays" and "5 People". And the dust jacket mentioned more books but not by title.
I have used "Tuesdays" as a quick reference when I have moments where I am not living up to my potential so please understand I posted this review knowing aware of the high regard I have for this mans' works.

For One More Day
By Mitch Albom

Rating:

Mitch Albom, the author of Tuesdays with Morrie, and The Five People You Meet in Heaven, has written another provocative, insightful, sentimental book, the causes us to explore the possibility that we could have one more day in time with a parent. Perhaps long enough to see things from their point of view, and in the process to alter our life. Albom has been called the “fearless explorer of the wishful and the magical”, and this book is no exception. The result is a transcendent, sentimental and profound work that has the power to stir the reader.

For One More Day is the story of a mother and son, and the epiphany that comes with the experience of spending one more day with a loved one. Charley Benetto as a child favors his father. But suddenly, the father leaves, and the 11 year old Charley and his mother are forced to fend for themselves. Charley’s embarrassment and yearning for a complete family goes unanswered during the remainder of his childhood.

Years later, Charley is a broken man. Alcohol and depression have left him without a job, a family, and any semblance of a normal life. He reaches his limit when he learns that his only daughter has not invited him to her wedding. He decides to take his own life.
The book turns Capraesque, when Charley decides to return to his hometown. He fails in his attempt to end his life. He decides to go to his old home, where he once lived with his mother. To his amazement, he finds his mother, who died eight years before, is still inhabiting the old house, and takes him in as if nothing has ever happened. Charley drifts back in time, to spend one more ordinary day with his mother. What follows is a series of eye-opening revelations that cause him to come to terms with his mother, an explanation family secretes, and ultimately forgiveness. Charley learns things about his mother he never knew, including the pain and sacrifices she made for him. Drifting back and forth between the past and the present, Charley and his mother put back together the pieces of his broken life.

This book could have been a smoltzy throw away, but Albom’s masterful storytelling, inspiring characters, and biting insights make this a must read. This is wonderful books that spend many weeks on the best sellers list. For One More Day is a book of life and love lost, and then found. This book is more than just a good read, but a masterpiece of study of the existential condition of all of us. I highly recommend this fine book.

I love this book. I chose to purchase this book because after losing my own mother I have always thought how wonderful it would be to spend more time with her before she died.
I often have dreams about how that day would be. What I would say and where we would go.
Excellent story and I am definately going to share this book with my siblings.
Thanks,
Anita

I have read several books by Mitch Albom. His writing style is wonderful. He makes you feel like he's an old friend and he's recounting a story on the front porch over some lemonade on a warm summer night. His stories are easy reads, but still manage to have colorful characters that we can all relate to on some level. "For One More Day" is written in the first person & recounts a near death experience of an old, could-have-been baseball player who was planning to commit suicide, until his near death gave him the chance to spend a day tagging along with his long dead mother as she visited old friends who were getting ready to die themselves. Through the course of this day, he discovers all of the things about his mother that he never noticed or appreciated when she was alive, and realizes that his mostly absent father was not worthy of all the adoration bestowed upon him by his only son.
This book is the story of a man who chased a dream for most of his life and ultimately discovered what was really important in life.

  Hits Close to Home
Review created: 14/12/06

The book reminded me of my childhood - it hit close to home. My parents divorced when I was young and I did not get to see my dad very often - every other year or so. Then we moved away and it was even harder to see him. This all took place in the 1940's. Mitch hit some nerves - I should have been nicer/closer to my mom. Now that mom and dad are gone it would be great to see and talk to them again - for one more day.

It is a short/small book, only 200 pages - a real page turner. I read it easily in one day.

Larry

I bought this book for my girlfriend. She has read another of his books and really loved his writing style. She does not have a lot of time to read so a book like this is great for her. There are not a ton of pages and the reading is easy. I have not read the book so I guess I can't give an accurate review. I just know that my girlfriend loves the book.

Another in the excellent line of novels by Albom. His books always seem to resonate with me. Would highly recommend as Albom does a great job of discussing the balencing act young men must endure in the attempt to satisfy the sometimes competing interests of both parents. A must read for young men who have struggled with the balencing act of meeting the expectations of fathers and mothers.

Like all of Albom's books it makes you think more introspectively about life. Yours and those close to you. It was a little too similar to the "Five People You Meet in Heaven" in regard to the use of flashback. Overall though it was well worth reading.

Forgiveness is the key to redemption

This is the story of Charley, a child of divorce who is always forced to choose between his mother and his father. He grows into a man and starts a family of his own. But one fateful weekend, he leaves his mother to secretly be with his father - and she dies while he is gone. This haunts him for years. It unravels his own young family. It leads him to depression and drunkenness. One night, he decides to take his life. But somewhere between this world and the next, he encounters his mother again, in their hometown as he visits his old home, and gets to spend one last day with her - the day he missed and always wished he'd had. He asks the questions many of us yearn to ask, the questions we never ask while our parents are alive. By the end of this magical day, Charley discovers how little he really knew about his mother, the secret of how her love saved their family, and how deeply he wants the second chance to save his own.
I highly receommend this and the author's other books as well.

I recently read this book and decided to purchase and mail it to my adult son. The book was both heartwarming and insightful about our perceptions of relationships with family members but most of all HOW those perceptions are formed. To a large degree, the book details the life of a young mother following a divorce and her attempt to shield her young son from the painful experiences of losing his father. I believe it's a book meant to be shared with any adult male who might wonder about HOW his relationship with his mother may have materialized at a young age...and HOW he can ultimately grow to appreciate her sacrifices for him, ultimately understanding the true meaning of a mother's love.

For One More Day Makes You Think

I really liked Tuesdays With Morrie and I liked The Five People You Meet In Heaven so I wanted to read this book by Mitch Albom. It makes you think about the people you have lost and what you would do if you could have another day with them. In the book it is just the normal day to day activities but they answer all the questions he had. It was a good read. :)

I was looking for a fast and easy "beach read" book for my last vacation. I have never been disappointed by any of Mr. Albom's books so this one looked perfect. I was familiar with the story line but had no idea how this story would affect me. I lost my beloved Mom 3 yrs. ago and what I would give for "One More Day". The lesson I got from this book is that when our elders are alive ASK MORE QUESTIONS ! Learn about their life and learn all the truths and falses of their life. Mom and I always had the usual chit chats but when ever she started reminising I only half listened. Now I have so many questions about her life but I missed my chance.
My New years resolution is to start writing journals about myself for my children after I am gone.
Thank You Mitch for another heartwarming and beautiful story. My only complaint was that it ended much too fast.

Charles "Chick" Benetto, an aging, wantabe, almost hasbeen, baseball player, turned alcoholic, goes on a sucide mission. After a drunk driving accident he is teetering between life and death, and gets to spend One More Day with his deceased mother, who helps him to gain understanding as to why and how his life got so messed up and he finds that he does have some reasons to go on living.

A very good story. A book about family relationships, a quick read, an easy book to read.Has been made into a movie as well.

For one more day by Mitch Albom is by far, the best book I have read. It really makes you think about your family relationships and to NOT take one day for granted. (Which most of us do) It is a great story that pulls at your heart strings. I was truly surprised by this story from begining to end. I think a lot of people will relate to the story line. I laughed and I can honestly say that this is the first book that made me cry. I highly recommend this book. You won't be able to put this one down.

I am impressed and amazed at the writting style of Mitch Albom. He can have you in the present time in one paragraph and 50 years earlier in the next, without confusion. He has a way with bringing you right into the story, giving you the right information at the right time and making you feel like the story is yours. I have read all 3 of his "non-sports" related books, each one I finished the first time I picked them up. I even bought the audio books for my husband who travels for work and doesn't really care to read that much. He LOVED the stories and talked about them for days. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone and have no complaints whatsoever!
