Minolta AF 50mm F/1.7 lens is most popular lens. But the Sony(Minolta) decides to produce AF 50mm F/1.4 lens instead of this lens.
Af 50mm F/1.4 is more expensive than AF 50mm F/1.7, but brighter.
This lens is very fast to focus and light weight.
Filter size is 49mm. Minimum focus range is 18 in.
So this lens is suitable for a model photo, such as a baby or friends.
Minolta DSLR 5d, 7d and Sony A100 fit this lens.
If you have a sweetheart, use this lens.

50mm "prime" sets the standard for Autofocus lenses
Review created: 02/04/07
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

For clarity, all other lenses are compared to this lense as a "base-line." This is because it is as good as it gets. You won't find a sharper lense than one of the "prime" lenses. This lense has a massive aperture.

At f1.7, you can take photos in low light at the same shuuter speeds that other lenses take in the day time. Often in low light, the photo I take looks very close to what I see with my natural eye.

This lens is light weight and simple to operate. They are inexpensive and considering the cost (versus a "new" lens today), a complete steal.

I have many other lenses, many that zoom past this lense, and many that are wider. I didn't think I would use it much but just purchased it because they are only about $80-100 on the used market. Boy was I surprised. I use this lense as many as my other "high priced" zoom lenses.

As more and more amateur photographers switch to DSLR, these lenses will eventually get snatched up. The prices are already increasing. Pick one up, you won't be sorry.

  Minolta AF 50/1,7
Review created: 10/10/08

This is a younger sibling of 50/1.4.
What I must to say?
It is very capable lens. Needn't to compare its sharpness to any zooms, include sharp Zeiss 16-80 and Minolta 24-85 - this lens is much sharper.
This lens is essential for portraits on cropped sensors - APS-C, it's EFR is about 75 mm that with 1.7 (slightly softer) or 2.0 (more sharper) diaphragm let you do what you want. Bokeh is not as good as in 85/1.4, but not bad at all.
Building quality is excellent.
It is pity that Sony dropped support of this lens and switch to much more expensive 50/1.4

  My Favorite for Portraits
Review created: 06/04/09

I bought this lens to use on my Sony Alpha 350. I have previously used its manual focus counterpart on my Minolta 35mm cameras. This lens has very quickly became one of my favorites. It is super fast to focus and gives excellent results without fail. I highly recommend it for anyone planning to do much portrait work with their Sony DSLR

This ia a fast sharp lens which is excellent for portrait. You cannot beat the value for this prime lens. Just be aware of the conditions as some of these lens are over 20 years old, some may have a little rattle. But nothing your cameral technicians cannot fix with a couple of bucks.

  Great lens

At one side this lens seem quite expensive due to the hype on eBay. On the other hand is for sure the best lens in my drawer. It is clear because the others are zoom lens. Most of all there are no aberations at all, and images are ofcourse very crisp. Front part is not rotating so usage of filters is piece of cake.

A "big" lens in a small body
Review created: 30/09/08

Having just purchased an A700, I needed one fast lens. I can work around most things with a slower zoom, but when you need light, you need light. The only alternative is a fast lens.

Build quality is excellent, sharpness is also excellent with almost edge to edge sharpness at any aperture. Wonderful Minolta colors and resolution. I have purchased another one for a back-up because this lens is almost indispensable. I also plan on eventually purchasing the full-frame A900 body (when it is available as a "used" camera on ebay) and this will work perfectly as the "normal" lens as it did in film cameras. I am also going to look at other high-quality Minolta lenses with that in mind. The prices are going up now so it's time to make decisions.

More rediscovered stuff from Minolta.

Essential lens for Maxxum and Alpha camera users
Review created: 25/11/06

This lens should be in every Maxxum or Alpha photographer's camera bag. It's inexpensive, well-built, compact, very fast, and high quality. Combined with the in-body image stabilization of the Maxxum 7D/5D and the Alpha A100, this makes an excellent low-light, no-flash photography lens. It is sharp and produces excellent images.

Get it today and keep it in your bag. I find myself using it regularly and always producing terrific results. When I was shooting my daughter for a Christmas card picture, I grabbed this lens instead of some more expensive ones, partially for the ease of handling (small and light) but also for the image quality.

Konica Minolta Normal AF 50mm f/1.7 Autofocus Lens
Review created: 11/02/09

NOTE: Camera: Minolta Maxxum 5D. I bought this lens primarily for headshot photography - indoors and outside. Other lenses I own are the Minolta 70-210mm 1:4 (32) (beercan) and the Tamron 17 - 50mm 1:2.8.

Minolta's 50mm f1.7 prime (meaning fixed - it cannot be zoomed in/out) lens is hands down the sharpest lens I have yet used on my Minolta Maxxum 5D. I can now see every detail on a subject. The eyes of my subjects are especially clear. I do not know if it's because this lens is a prime, or not, but it focuses much faster than my other two lenses.
And at f1.7, this lens is a master in low-light situations. I can keep my ISO low and still get beautifully lit low-light photographs.

I do not have anything bad to say about this lens. If you own a Konica Minolta/Sony Alpha digital camera, this lens is a must in your arsenal. You can find it for a fantastic price on ebay.

  Fast, Sharp Lens

I have a very good 18-70mm zoom lens for my Sony Alpha 100 camera, so the focal length of this lens falls inside that range. However, I wanted a faster - f1.7 instead of f3.5 - lens which, as a fixed focal length rather than a zoom, is somewhat sharper. The lens is also smaller and lighter than the zoom lens, making it easier to use for candid, available light photography.

The Minolta lens I purchased works perfectly on the Sony camera and is everything I hoped it would be.

If you have a Sony Dslr and need a fast general purpose lens then this
is just the ticket. This lens works out to be a 75mm (35m equilivant )on my Sony A200 and will focus down to just about 1 foot. The beauty of this lens is that you can find them on ebay for under a $100.... Thats hard to beat in this day and age.

  Minolta AF 50mm f1.7
Review created: 08/10/09
by:

I purchased one of these lenses about 12 years ago and used it on a couple of Minolta bodies before it was stolen with the rest of my camera gear about 3 years ago. After a move to a 7D and then an A700, I found that I had a use for a prime lens in that focal range. The lens that I got was in very good condition and at the right price.

Konica Minolta Normal AF 50mm f/1.7 Lens
Review created: 06/09/09

An excellent little lens that SHOULD BE IN YOUR CAMERA BAG!! if not this one then the M1,4 O,N or the Sony1,4. Its really sharp and responsive in low light! Due to its versatility I use it when i do Weddings more than the 85/1,4 because this glass is fast!! Really cheap and way better than the plastic wanabe that Sony has introduced. This Glass can be use on your film and digital bodies. Its not too wide and not too long, its just right. There's a reason this one was included with most bodies. Of course its not perfect it has its faults yet for the price and built its a winner in my book. The lens hood sucks but you can always buy screw on hoods.
