Revisiting Lyle Lovett; or, Timing is everything
Review created: 01/11/08(updated 01/11/08)

Frankly I was surprised that there hadn't already been an eBay review of Lyle Lovett's album PONTIAC. A little more thought raises the fact that it came on the scene well ahead of eBay itself, and by the time eBay appeared, the album might have seemed, well, old hat, considering how time deals cruelly with popular music, even with material that deserves more than the proverbial twenty minutes of fame. Such, I submit, is this album, which, while hardly of eternal greatness, has one song that I suspect will last longer than anyone, even LL himself, might have imagined. That song is, of course, "If I had a boat", which turns-up all over the place, if you pay attention. The remainder of the album is good for what it is, and that's not bad, but "If I had a boat" is worth the price of admission by itself. By the way, if I myself had a boat, I'd drag Lyle on-board, and not let him off until he understood that in singing, most of the reason words are used is for communication. Except for his diction on the song I like, he has a silly habit of mumbling, a habit he shares with most of his generation. The intention may be to give some unspecified extra emotional oomph, but, well, it comes out as posturing at best, and post-adolescent disregard for the listener at worst. But hey, who are we, after all? Just the people who keep him in business. Even so, I recommend the album, especially at the bargain prices at which it can be found on eBay. You'll have to excuse, I've gotta go ride my pony on my boat. -- secondbaron
